U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to hold direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin to address the ongoing Ukraine war. This comes amid stalled Ukraine-Russia peace talks in Istanbul, Turkey.
Trump Putin Ukraine War Talks: Putin Skips Istanbul Peace Negotiations
Putin declined to attend the recent peace talks in Turkey, sending a low-level delegation instead. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy criticized the move as disrespectful toward the U.S. and Turkey. Despite this, talks went ahead with discussions on prisoner exchanges and ceasefire proposals.

Trump stressed that real progress on Ukraine hinges on a direct meeting between him and Putin. “Nothing will change until Putin and I talk,” he said, highlighting the urgency to end the conflict that costs thousands of young lives weekly.
Putin Skips Istanbul Peace Talks, Sending Low-Level Delegation:
Russian President Vladimir Putin declined to attend the peace negotiations in Turkey, instead sending a lower-level delegation led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky. This move drew criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who labeled the Russian presence as “a sign of disrespect” toward both the U.S. and Turkish leaders.
Despite Putin’s absence, talks proceeded in Istanbul, with Ukraine represented by a high-level team headed by Defence Minister Rustem Umerov. Discussions included a possible 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange and proposals for a ceasefire.

U.S. Pushes for 30-Day Ceasefire, Russia Uncommitted:
President Zelenskyy has agreed to a U.S.-backed proposal for a 30-day ceasefire, but Russia has yet to respond favorably. Trump, calling the ongoing casualties unacceptable, stated, “We’re losing 5,000 young lives each week. We have to end this.”
He added that he might divert from returning to Washington and instead head directly to meet Putin, though he also expressed interest in seeing his newly born grandson.
Kremlin Responds: Putin-Trump Meeting “Necessary”:
In Moscow, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov acknowledged Trump’s interest in direct talks and confirmed Russia’s willingness—provided the meeting is “well prepared.” Peskov added that such a discussion is “necessary for addressing global and regional challenges, including the Ukraine crisis.”
