Tejas Fighter Jet (2025): HAL Ramps Up Production as IAF Prepares for Mk-1A Inductions

Tejas Fighter Jet: Overview

The Tejas fighter jet is India’s indigenous single-engine, multi-role Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), designed to operate effectively in high-threat air environments. Developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Tejas Mk-1A represents a significant leap in India’s air power capabilities, featuring advanced avionics, enhanced survivability, and superior combat performance.
In October 2025, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to induct two Tejas Mk-1A fighter jets, strengthening its fleet as the number of operational fighter squadrons has fallen to 31 from the sanctioned 42. The Mk-1A variant is expected to replace the aging MiG-21 jets while providing modern combat capabilities.

Tejas Fighter Jet Production – HAL Updates:

HAL confirmed the upcoming deliveries, stating that it has received one GE-F404 engine from GE Aerospace, with a second engine expected by the end of September 2025. These engines will power the two Tejas Mk-1A jets.

“HAL has received the third GE404 engine for LCA Mk1A. One more engine is scheduled to be delivered by the end of September. Engine supply chain improvement will pave the way for LCA Mk1A aircraft deliveries,” a HAL spokesperson said, reported PTI.

HAL currently operates two production lines in Bengaluru and has initiated a third line in Nashik, which will eventually support an annual output of eight aircraft. A parallel private-sector supply chain—comprising VEM Technologies (centre fuselage), Alpha (rear fuselage), and L&T (wings)—is expected to contribute six more jets annually, raising overall production to 30 aircraft per year.

✨ This ramp-up in Tejas fighter jet production reflects India’s commitment to self-reliance in defence technology and strengthening the IAF fleet.

Tejas Fighter Jet – Strategic Importance:

The Tejas Mk-1A will play a crucial role in modernising the IAF fleet:

FeatureImportance
Replacement for MiG-21Phasing out obsolete jets while maintaining operational readiness
Single-engine multi-roleCapable of air-to-air, air-to-ground, and reconnaissance missions
Advanced avionics & radarEnhanced situational awareness and combat effectiveness
Indigenous designReduces dependence on foreign suppliers and strengthens India’s defence ecosystem

💡 Insight: The Tejas fighter jet not only upgrades India’s aerial combat capabilities but also boosts domestic defence manufacturing.

HAL & IAF Collaboration:

The 2021 Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for 83 Tejas Mk-1A jets had faced delays due to engine supply constraints. HAL has now built six jets, which are ready and flying, with plans to produce 12 aircraft in 2025 using available GE engines.

Recently, the government approved an additional batch of 97 Tejas fighters, costing around Rs 67,000 crore, highlighting India’s long-term vision to expand and modernise its fighter fleet.

Final Thoughts – Tejas Fighter Jet:

The Tejas fighter jet programme marks a major milestone in India’s defence capabilities. With HAL ramping up production and the IAF preparing to induct the Mk-1A jets, India is steadily achieving its goal of self-reliant air power. The advanced capabilities of Tejas Mk-1A promise to enhance the IAF’s operational efficiency while replacing older aircraft, securing India’s skies for decades to come.

🔥 The induction of Tejas fighter jets is a testament to India’s engineering prowess and strategic defence planning.
